What should I do if my child has a fever?
Fevers are common symptoms for many different childhood illnesses. Our guidance is the following:
Call immediately if
- Your child is less than 2 months old AND the fever is equal to or greater than 100.4F (38.0C)
- Your child is older than 2 months old and their fever is equal to or greater than 100.4F (38.0C) for over 24 hours
- If the fever has persisted for more than 24 hours
- If the child has any behavioral changes (appears weak, decreased responsiveness, or is difficult to awaken)
At-Home Care:
Fever is often helpful in fighting infection. Offer Tylenol or Motrin (for kids over 6 months) and keep your child well hydrated until they can be seen. It also helps to dress your child in lightweight clothing to help them stay cool.
Never hesitate to give us a call or book an appointment if you have any concerns.
If you believe you or your child are experiencing a life-threatening medical emergency, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
