Frequently asked questions
When should my child see a pediatric dentist?
Most children should see a pediatric dentist:
- By age one or within 6 months of the first tooth erupting
- If you notice tooth discoloration or spots
- If your child complains of mouth pain
- After dental trauma (chipped or knocked-out tooth)
If you're unsure, your child’s pediatrician can help guide you.
When should I call the pediatrician versus dentist?
Call the Pediatrician If:
- Your child has fever with mouth sores
- There’s facial swelling
- There are feeding concerns related to oral pain
- You suspect a broader infection
- You have concerns about teething or related symptoms
Call the Dentist If:
- A tooth is chipped, cracked, or knocked out
- There’s tooth pain without other symptoms
- You notice cavities or bleeding gums
- It’s time for a routine cleaning
When in doubt, start with us and we’ll help you determine the next best steps.
Does my child need a pediatric dentist or a general dentist?
Pediatric dentists receive additional training in child development and behavior management. Many families prefer them, especially for younger children.
What if my child is afraid of the dentist?
Pediatric dentists are prepared for this! They're familiar with children who may be scared or anxious. The best way to reduce nerves is to prepare your child by talking about the visit ahead of time and practicing saying "ahh."
You can also ask your pediatrician for guidance on preparing your child.
Does Medicaid cover pediatric dental visits in Florida?
Yes, most Medicaid plans cover routine dental visits for children. Check your specific plan for details.
Are you able to provide preventative dental care until the first dental appointment?
While we're not a dental practice, we do include basic oral health screenings as part of your child's well-visit care. Starting at the first tooth eruption and through age 3, we examine your child's teeth and apply fluoride varnish at every well-check.
These screenings aren't a substitute for a full dental exam, but they're a meaningful first step and a great way to catch any early concerns.
